Most team-building exercises involve presentations, workshops, or outdoor activities. Grid Game takes a different route.
The challenge, hosted by AM.CO.ZA, places teams of up to five people in front of a working A3 DTF printer with a task that sounds simple on paper: take it apart, put it back together, and get it printing again within ten working days.
It doesn’t take long for teams to realise that success has very little to do with one person’s technical ability.
As the printer is stripped down into smaller and smaller components, somebody has to keep track of parts. Someone else needs to document where things came from. Wiring, software settings, mechanical assemblies, and troubleshooting all demand attention at different stages of the challenge.
Teams quickly discover that communication matters. A misplaced component, an unlabeled cable, or an incorrect assumption made on Day 2 can create problems several days later during reassembly.
The challenge unfolds in stages. Participants begin with orientation and training before receiving a functional printer. They then move through testing, disassembly, reassembly, and finally machine operation, where they must produce a completed DTF printed product before the deadline expires.
According to the organisers, one of the most interesting aspects of the challenge is watching how different groups approach the same problem. Some divide responsibilities immediately. Others work collectively on every step. No two teams tend to follow exactly the same process.
While the possibility of winning a printer valued at more than R32,000 is a strong motivator, many participants may find the experience itself just as valuable. The challenge requires planning, patience, problem-solving, and cooperation under pressure.
For companies, technical teams, and groups of friends who enjoy figuring out how things work, Grid Game offers an unusual opportunity: learning by doing, while relying on each other to get the job done.
